iRedMail Home Server Setup

I'm currently in the process of creating a KVM guest VM as a mail server running Debian Wheezy and the latest version of iRedMail. Setting up iRedMail is as simple as pie, but I have a few noob questions related to routing and domain names. If anyone can help I'd be grateful!

Currently, I have a domain name registered, lets call it foo.com. I also have an mx record set for mail.foo.com which points to my public IP ofc. However, my internal network domain name is, lets say foobar.com, so its different from my external. Is this an issue or can I accept mail from foo.com to my internal mail server in the foobar.com domain?

I'm assuming I need to port forward port 25 to my mail server internal IP but are there any other ports for mail transport? Also, when setting up iRedMail I'm asked to enter my virtual domain name. I'm assuimg this is foo.com, my external name instead of my internal domain name?

As ever with me this is an educational exercise so these are likely daft questions, I'm just getting myself confused as the mx record i'm setting on my domain hoster's site differs from my internal mail server. Do I even need to use mail.foo.com or do i change it to <internal server name>.foo.com in my host's control panel?

I have a small Bind server managing internal DNS resoloution btw with an MX record set to <internal server name>.foobar.com. Do I need an A record for mail.foobar.com or is 'mail' just a placeholder which is generally used but not required?

I hope this garbled mess makes sense to someone! If so, any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Many Thanks!
