How to break into Linux Administration

This may or may not be the right place, if not I apologize.

I'd like to break into Linux Administration and i'm not quite sure where to start. Ruby on Rails and other technologies have always fascinated me and would really like to make a go at developing skills and earning certificates.

My current situation is as follows: I am a gainfully employed T1 helpdesker with mild windows server skills.

  • I have hours of free time at work and full administration access ( an exclusive windows network), a primary motivator is that i can no longer handle dicking around on the internet for hours 6 a day.

  • I have spare machines available that i can use as servers and i also have tinkered with Ec2, but it's daunting without a guideline.

  • I have money available for courses, but which ones? My previous goal was to signup for fall courses; I have had unstable employment for several years now and am doing my best to boolster savings.

  • My biggest flaw is i am not much of a self starter, with course work laid out i can churn through lessons and videos, but setting up a server and tinkering without a specific goal in mind will often to lead to distraction.

My endgame with this post is to find some cheap online linux training or guidelines in preparation for more serious difficult training.

OP Note I'm very fortunate to have my current job, but i've always wanted something more than waiting for things to break or a request to have a printer installed.
