Benefits for buying into a linux distro? (SUSE or RedHat) A requirement for systems at my new job.

I've been a Linux user for some time. I've built numerous servers for work, mostly ubuntu (free), and all my home desktops and servers now are just plain debian.

I've started a new job where if I want a linux desktop system, I have to buy either RedHat or Suse (licensed copies.)

Interested in what Suse has to offer, I'm looking at downloading the 60 day trial, but it's near 16gb (2 DVDs) and I don't have a fast internet at home to spend 15 hours doing this. It's only $50 for the basic desktop license for personal use no support.

But my question is, What benefit do I get for paying for this license?

There is no clear information as to what do I get for paying vs. going openSUSE (which I can not use in my new job.) What is the major differences between paying and going full open?

If I play with openSUSE what will I be missing that I don't get from the SUSE trial, or the $50 no support license?

Also, please no "well you get paid support when you need it", I get that part of it... I'm looking for more details of the software packages, how updates are handled, "you're locked into X, vs Y or Z software being a choice".
