Is package management even worth it anymore?

I find myself supporting boxes with lots of software that lives on github and changes frequently. I can spend a lot of time packaging these into rpms, or I can just use git (or puppet) to hold the software at a certain tag or commit.

TL;DR Should I stop worrying, learn to love source control, and spurn rpm?
