P2V an old Oracle Linux server

Hi,

We have an old development server running Oracle Enterprise Linux that we need to virtualize for VSphere. The server is running Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS release 4 (Nahant Update 8).

I have downloaded the VMware standalone converter and i am about to try to make a clone of the box but before i do so i would like to check if you guys had any experience with this kind of work.

I am not a Linux admin, i work in a Windows shop, i have some understanding of Linux ( i setup a few Nagios boxes runninng on Debian and Ubuntu ).

As far as my googlefu took me, i see a lot of posts about conversion failing at 97% because of failure to reconfigure the server, in which case i would need to perform 3 manual reconfiguration: fixing fstab, installing GRUB, and rebuilding initrd image

Do you guys have some feedback to help me go through this before i make the big jump?

Edit: also what is the best way to make a full copy of the server before attempting the conversion?
