Are we in another Bubble? Sysadmin applicants making dot.com-like salary and perk demands

I've been on the hunt for a Senior Linux Admin now for a couple of months and I've had three different applicants turn down pretty substantial offers.

Some background, we're a social media startup in Toronto, so it's a small team, but we're doing some pretty interesting stuff with cutting edge systems and we're pushing out a lot of traffic even now. I've had ads on Craigslist, monster and workopolis looking for senior people for months, willing to pay top dollar, but the number of resumes coming in is a trickle, and the ones who do get to the offer stage making all kinds of (to me) unreasonable demands.

  • One refused to do any "office IT work" as it was "beneath him" and also wanted to be paid hourly.
  • One guy with 3 years of actual work experience (ie. not senior) wanted $100K/year, plus on-call bonus pay.
  • Another accepted the (substantial) offer but then wanted to renegotiate the salary after, then changed his mind.

What's going on? A couple of years ago you needed 10 years experience to get $80K in Toronto, and now all the resumes I'm getting are juniors wanting six figures.

Is it the explosion of cloud services? What do you think?
