Sorry to be a bit abstract, but i don't want my actual self or the business i work for connected with this question. I'm a manager who's currently hiring linux system administrators. Not people who know something about linux and can take calls, but people who can or have the real potential to perform deep dive system and kernel level troubleshooting and implementation/optimization of custom tools. The kids out of college i interview are seriously useless. I've talked almost exclusively to CS majors, but have had a few CE or EE. Though many of them will say "i use linux on my desktop" or "i developed in a linux environment at school", it turns out they are using it like someone might use windows. They barely know ls
let alone two or three common directories in /. Most of the 'development' they've done turns out to be writing a bit of code in nano or pico, or even writing it in notepad and then doing a copy/past through an ssh session and then running a make or gcc. If i'm lucky, they've used python in windows.
I know people can learn, but i also know that somewhere out there are kids who want to be linux system administrators. It's a unique breed. People with enough coding background and skills to understand how the OS works at a low level, but don't want to spend their days coding and are passionate about the linux os and solid implementation of real world applications.
My question is how do i find them without going to reddit?
