SLES, XEN, and my sanity...

OK, so I have a client that is running SLES and has three VM's on it, two other linux VM's and one Server '08 VM. I need to get the hypervisor updated to at least support Server08R2 as we are building them a new domain (Novell currently, very poorly implemented). It doesn't even show in the list when creating a new VM.

I also have to upgrade the Array Controller firmware. I have to backup the files on each VM, then backup each VM. This server is running on the original firmware for everything, and I have to apply HP's Support Pack for ProLiant and get at least the array upgraded as it's been causing HDD problems.

So:

  1. Backing up XEN VM's and working with Xen on SLES, any guidance? suggestions? caveats?

  2. How is XEN as a hypervisor? It runs pretty solid for them. Should we migrate them to a "true" (hypervisor-only OS) hypervisor like VMWare/XenServer and just run the SLES machines inside of that?

  3. XEN updates? just need at least support for 2008R2 because it isn't even listed. Would like it to make sure it is fully supported. We can do without 2012 for them at the moment.

  4. SLES: stability/updates.. Any guidance? suggestions? caveats? Management secrets?
