Reverse Engineer bin files?

I have a monitoring agent that installs via RPM and for the most part that's great. It's a little odd in that it installs the agent in a /var/ subdirectory. My main problem is that it generates a config file in /etc/ that contains the monitoring agent server location and this is created by a bin file. I know I will have to repackage up the rpm file but i need to know how to change this from "localhost" in the code within the bin file. Any help here would be greatly appreciated.
