Learning Linux and Scripting for a Networking person

Like the title says, I'm a networking person. In school I learned basic programming in Java, Php, c#, and VB. I also learned the basics of Linux. The problem is since leaving school I have not had to use those skills much and they have atrophied. I'm now in a position where Linux and programming skills could help me take the next step in my career, but the problem is I don't find much need for them in my daily job.

My question to all of you is what is the best way to relearn this stuff and make it stick when I don't have much use for it in my daily job duties? I have had no problems studying and learning all the Cisco stuff because I use it everyday at work, but when it comes to Linux and programming I just don't use it enough. If I make it to the next level however Linux and especially programming skills will be very useful and used much more often.
