Setting up email for personal domains, with a catch

Hello,

as the owner of several personal domains, it would be nice to be able to send and receive email through it.

However I've had trouble with it in the past.

Case 1: Home server on a residential connection - even if your ISP does not block destination port 25 outright, your IP is likely blacklisted by just about everyone. I could relay it through another server, but:

Case 2: Root server in a datacenter - should work in theory, but I found installing and maintaining daemons and settings a pain in the ass. There's so much complexity. Plus I had major trouble with Gmail, which about a year ago started rejecting emails sent through my server (not spam, reverse DNS correct, MX record correct, SPF entry present)

I would be happy not having to maintain mail, pop, imap daemons, but at the same time, I definitely don't want mail to be stored on someone else's servers (apart from what's necessary for message delivery, of course)

I am not generally opposed to external services, however, as long as I can store mail myself and they do not cost an arm and leg.

What options do I have?

Thanks!
