Creating own HA mail service

Hi,

Recently my friend advised me to create HA mail servers for myself (I have single VPS which holds my domain). Cost is not that much bigger and I could learn more actually as I work as tech support for hosting company and getting such knowledge might help someday becaome an admin! :P (at least that is my dream). Some time ago I have installed Mailcow which is pretty straightforward and idiot-proof (no offense to anyone!) and I recommend it if you are lazy :P

Now coming to my problem. I will have max... 4 users (my domain is my surname so that's the reason). I have few doubts now. I will ask probably long series of questions so please forgive me! Here we go:

  1. First of all how to make it HA? Setting mail server is not a problem. Making mirror copy of it is the main point. Will rsync be solution here? To be honest it is my first time with HA and I don't know. NFS maybe? To be honest no idea! I must sync somehow my stuff :P

  2. What distribution to use? CentOS or Debian? I know Debian as I run it on my current server (well know is overused here) but getting to know other distros is cool. If I can Google it or ask here it is ok for me. Linux is still something that I don't understand completely (I moved to OSX recently and I still like Windows) but I like to learn :) Also if it comes to reliability I heard CentOS is better so I don't know.

  3. What will be the best software combination? Or maybe what is the best software combination to understand WHOLE mail server idea while setting it? Mailcow offers Postfix + Dovecot and it seems to be ok but you might offer something better.

  4. Is there any admin browser tool to help with administrating whole deal? Graphs, managing accounts etc? Nothing fancy just something to help with avoid ssh when not needed. Mailcow contains rddtool and few other cool things that I can click out. For example set some stuff in postfix: http://imgur.com/FfcwnM4

  5. Roundcube or ...? :) I am using Roundcube right now but it is too simple. Is there anything else that I could use? I know simple is good but sometimes I lack some options.

  6. Probably missed stuff so if you are so kind let me know :D or maybe share an advice that I could use :)

P.S. if it is wrong /r/ please don't kill me. Thanks! Artur
