Is there a way to verify downloaded SCP backups executed via cron?

Using SCP cron job as a simple solution for off-site backups. Wanted to know if there was a way to verify the receipt of said remote file(s) via MD5 or some other protocol? Then after cronjob completes, verifies, I'd like it to send an email to my ticketing system. I think I can handle the last part.

Not sure if that was at all clear.
