So I'm trying to switch careers from teaching into sysadmin, and I'm caught in the old catch-22 of needing experience to get experience for entry level jobs.
All my experience has come from tinkering with my home server, and it feels a little ridiculous to put this stuff on my resume. I'd really like to create or contribute to public projects to better impress my future boss.
A few ideas that I have so far:
- buy a cheapo VPS and do some hosting (wiki? blog? forum?)
- learn programming and contribute to open source (I have very little programming experience, and I'm not really looking to be a developer)
- ????
So I need your help! What are some ways I can learn and demonstrate the skills I've earned to future employers.
TL;DR: Please help me think of projects so I can tell prospective employers, "Yeah I don't have professional experience but I can demonstrate my skills if you click <hyperlink here>."
EDIT: Thank you everyone for your wonderful comments and suggestions. In addition to some good ideas like blogging about my experience and putting some of my personal scripts on GitHub, I've gotten some general overall suggestions on where and how to improve. Thanks for the encouragement.
