Up to know, When I need to install and configure any services, Most of the time I always use package manager, I haven't compiled the source and install it. Now I have a feeling, I should use source instead of package manager, if the services provide you a source package, because

1. To get the latest stable packages from official site 2. To maintain the same dir and configuration among most of the distro,

It is so cumbersome, when I need to think about different configuration command and configuration location when working on more than one distro, one example is, remembering the configuration and directory structure of apache web server in Ubuntu/Debain and Centos/Redhat.

I always forget, If I compiled from source, I can have same dir structure among the major distro, and I can mastery the services.

What about your view, just I am thinking about this? I haven't have compiled and use any services.

What about your experiences
