Windows sysadmin trying to understand how Linux shops work

Hello,

I have been working as a sysadmin for 4 years for a small company (about 100 users, non tech-industry) that mostly runs a Windows environment with maybe the odd LAMP server. I would like to learn more about how Linux shops function in comparison to a business running a Windows environment.

In a typical Windows environment you would likely have multiple servers (physical and virtualized) running Windows Server and have client computers running Windows desktop OS. You would manage user accounts, groups, GPOs through Active Directory. From there you would set up services like DNS, DHCP, WSUS, Exchange, MS SQL, etc. working together as a stack.

Here are some questions I have:

  • What would a typical Linux environment look like for a business?
  • Do companies that mostly use Linux also run it as their client OS?
  • How does authentication work with clients? (In Windows everything is done through AD, user/group accounts)

The reason I ask is because I am thinking of one day transitioning into a Linux admin. I've played around with Linux servers off and on in the past, but in the last few months I've been taking on learning Linux admin skills more seriously. I know the basics of bash, how to get around, using apt-get/rpm etc. I've practiced some bash scripting but I'm still a beginner. I want to be more involved in automation and would like to learn how to use configuration management tools like Chef and Puppet. I have some programming knowledge (not software dev level by any means) with Python and C# and I am currently learning Ruby.

Thanks in advance!
