Reusing an old server

Hey!

6 months ago, I bought an HP Proliant DL380 G4. I guess it used to be a really capable server... but right not it's not able to do anything useful anymore.

I wanted to use it as the "big server that runs everything".

It has 2 Gigabit connectors, but the problem is that I'm using a 100Mbps router with dd-wrt as a switch which is itself connected through a powerline adapter to my router. Which is not really nice.

I was therefore planning on buying a Gigabit Ethernet switch, but damn those things aren't cheap!

So yep, I'm here to ask you if what I want to do is really possible, and worth the time, money, and work. (Please keep in mind that the server only has 6GB of RAM)

=> I want to run PFSense on a VM to achieve better routing performances (Our current router is not capable enough)

=> I want a FreeNAS server, in a VM again, to stream its media content to the TV and download medias to it using the bittorrent protocol

=> My sis wants game servers, so eh I'll throw a Windows Server 2008 VM and put her game servers on it

Is it worth the money? Because I'd be damned if I bought a $80 switch only to find out the server can't handle the load. Also, what distro do you recommend? I downloaded CentOS, but I never used it. I have absolutely no experience with Debian but I do have a lot with Arch if that helps (even though I understand that you're not going to put Arch on a server)
