ugh. wtf.

yeah so the nas is a buffalo terastation. guest mode means the nas sets group and owner to 99. i read this is a uid reserved by linux systems. it should be labeled as nobody.

At some point i was able to ls -l the directory. it showed the folders owned by 99 and group 99. The perms on folders i could not access had 0 for world. i figured that was causing the perm denied msgs. However as root i could not chown or mod the files or folders; maybe the nas locked them?

Now, that ive been playing with it. I can't access any of the files / folders; permission denied logged in as root. I thought root had access to anything regardless of perms.

edit - set the guest mode to enabled because buffalo suggests it when the files will be accessed via another protocol; in this case smb.
