Question regarding vulnerabilities in Linux

I was reading http://www.nixtutor.com/freebsd/9-ways-to-make-linux-more-secure/ and it had a link to security focus. I decided to check some of the services I have running (all personal). I checked Apache only to find that it's vulnerable. I'm running the most recent version in Ubuntu's repositories.

Now, my question isn't about this particular case but about cases like this in general. What's a sysadmin to do? My first guess would be to compile from source but I'm not really that experienced in the matter to know if that's the right choice.
