Hey all,
Took my exam today after feeling confident all week (company paid for a Redhat course, but I felt like I was at least familiar with the content at the worst of times with each of the concepts covered). Found out about an hour ago that I passed with a score of 300/300. I'm here to tell you it's not as bad as you think, and labs aren't as daunting as they seem for someone who's only done multiple choice style exams!
First of all, if you're considering a course and don't feel very comfortable with the objectives on the RHCSA (these can be identified on the Redhat site - couldn't find them on hand), then I suggest you consider the course (as it was excellent, regardless of how I felt going into it), or spend adequate time familiarising yourself with the different concepts leading up to the exam - especially with the commands required to administrate a system utilising the different technologies that are encompassed in these concepts; some examples being: LVM, systemd, autofs.
Now I'm not really here to go into too much depth, as I'm sure those who know anything about the cert are aware of the NDA. What I will do however, is let you know that I'm going to build an RHCSA blog, with content covering each of the elements required for the RHCSA certification. I'll also try replicate some of the really useful lab tools used in the Red Hat course (assessment scripts, test scenarios etc), as they were brilliant for helping you try to assess what your ability level is like in a certain area - and were very useful for getting an idea of what an exam scenario may feel like being lab based and all (remember: each exam is different, and of course I'll in no way replicate anything Redhat laid out).
If anyone wants any additional information that is within bounds, post below or send me a direct message. I'll be happy to oblige if it keeps me within the confines of my agreement. Just bear in mind, I had zero Linux experience just over fourteen months ago. If I can do it, you can. Interest and passion in the subject does help, as well as a soothing beer each evening leading up to the exam!
Have a good weekend all. Blog link and further updates to follow at some point.
UPDATE: http://rhcsa.hugh.xyz/ - keep track of this site. I'll provide a page with regular updates too at some point.
TL;DR: Passed RHCSA, wasn't as bad as you'd think, will give useful study content in the near future for aspiring Redhatters to use.
Hugh
