designing system like amazon EC2 metadata

Hi guys - looking for some pointers here.

Situation: I would like to create what amazon has for metadata of a VM so that you can query a URL and get data about yourself from a guest VM and obtain the data from the host hypervisor. I would like to be able to export information such as VMWare configured NIC VLAN and other similar points of information only stored inside VMWware. For instance: http://docs.aws.amazon.com/AWSEC2/latest/UserGuide/ec2-instance-metadata.html .. but for ESX

Problem: What I can't seem to figure out is how exactly they've implemented it. I get its a web service but that IP stays the same across each VM and is only available to that VM - this is the part that stumps me. Do they have an internal NAT to point to their web service which returns the metadata? How does the service know what guest is requesting the data - those two objects are technically decoupled - I am guessing it is something done in the provision step which links the two by ID or something but for us, we don't have this, and I need to find a way to link a guest with itself in the hypervisor for extracting information

Ideas?
