New to Linux and NIS. I'm having an issue with connecting clients to the server properly.

So I'm using Cent OS 5.6 as a server and another as a client (all in VMs) and I have been trying to implement NIS for days. My issue is that once I connect to the NIS server with the client, I su to a user name nisuser which seems to go through just fine, but when I attempt to test it by switching the password it says there was an error and it didn't change the password. I also can't change back to root as it says the user doesn't exist. Then when I start up a new terminal I get this. Even worse, when I restart I get something about user 'gdm' not existing then it brings me to this screen where I can't log in to either root or nisuser, and after a while, it loops back to that GDM screen.

Anybody know where I went wrong? If you need any other information on my set up I would be happy to provide it. Any help is seriously appreciated.

[EDIT] Was using passwd not yppasswd, but I still have pretty much the same issues.
