How do you "stress-test" a site?

For a site migration, I used loader.io (free account) just now to test a site on the current server, and on my (destination) server, but I created a free account. I'm happy with the results, but I'd like to test it more thoroughly with more sites.

$99/month seems a bit high for the Pro account at loader.io, so I want to hear from you all. I know that they are spinning up Amazon EC2 (micro I assume) instances and they allow you to set the URI and HTTP headers with tests (which is very nice, although limited for the free account), then generates graphs / data, so there's some value there for sure.

But $99/month is a lot and I wonder, what do you all use for stress-testing? I have no problem hacking something together if there's a more economical alternative. What do you all use for this kind of thing?

Would love to hear your thoughts on this.
