kdump configurations

Does anyone set up separate file systems specifically for vmcore files? Many moons ago, we used to create /var/crash file systems to ensure that we would capture vmcores successfully if a system crashed, in an attempt to avoid /var filling up with logs or tmp files that would not allow the room to exist to successfully capture the crash files. Just wondering how other people handle it.

I assume an alternate method would be to set up alerts when the file system /var became 80% filled, or something like that.
