Why is my SMTP server my FQDN instead of mail.mydomain?

(CentOS 6.5) Ever since I setup my SMTP server I thought I set it up so it was "mail.mydomain.com" but as of late when I use the "Test config" option on the Roundcubemailinstaller if I put "mail.mydoman.com" to send a test SMTP server I get a connection timed out error, whereas if I put "myhostname.mydomain.com" I get an "OK". This is very strange to me.....I would like to have it as mail.mydomain rather than my FQDN. What do I need to do in my configurations to change it so that my SMTP server is mail.mydomain instead of my fqdn?
