remount as ro

I'm trying to create a failure scenario to test an application functioning under a read only root file system. I need to drop the system to read only state and I am OK with having to reboot it afterwards but I can't seem to find a way to force it in to read only while its up. System is a VM on vmware so any ideas that maybe I can do there (detach and reattach?) will be helpful
