I'm not new to Linux, but I'm really wondering why I should pick one linux distro over another? I'm not talking about something to tinker and play with, I mean production boxes or boxes that have a purpose.
As far as packages go and what's available I'm at the point where I typically host my own packages by either mirroring repos or in some cases create my own packages and create a repo.
At work I manage everything with puppet and the foreman, at home I've started moving everything besides a general "dev" box to being managed by puppet.
I just feel like I often see esoteric versions of Linux being used and I wonder if there's a real reason why that's the case. I think knowing Debian and RHEL is good enough, why should I explore other distros?
