HD Errors: Can read SMART, Can't Read Data

Reposted with hope someone can point me in the right direction from /r/computerforensics

Hi All

I have a Hard Drive attached to my linux box (since windows won't recognize it) and I am finding that I cannot access it as a block device over USB (and tried different cables). There is likely physical damage internally, but I do not hear any audible clicks or whirling so I am not throwing in the towel yet.

I have attempted to access it with mmls/parted along with kpartx and fdisk - all without luck. The only tool capable of consistently reading data from the device is hdparm, which provides what appears to be SMART data. When using DD, I have not been able to get any data out either.

Any thoughts would be much appreciated as I have crossed the line into the unknown areas of linux. Thank you in advance!
