rsync and many, many files

We are preparing to an rsync config for backup of files. Does rsync'ing lots of files cause a problem for rsync?

We have many, many files of small size, which we could exclude from the rsync as they are not crucial for backup, but if we allowed them to be rsynced, could this cause a problem for rsync? Is there anything else to consider?
