Live web streaming solution opinions?

So here's the setup. I have backyard chickens, and a backyard chicken-camera. I've played with a few, D-Link and Foscam, wifi/wired cameras. All of them have the ability to stream live from the camera via a java applet or similar.

However, if I embed that in a website that gets >2 visitors simultaneously, the stream quality goes to crap, and I'm fairly certain it's not my upload bandwidth capping out but the processing ability of the camera itself.

I've played around with capturing the stream with ffmpeg and/or VLC, but getting the server process configured and staying running nonstop always seemed to be a major issue.

If camgirls can stream to hundreds of watchers, I feel like this shouldn't be that hard.

Does anyone know of a (preferably free) way to capture the video stream and reliably broadcast it over the web to multiple viewers? I've already looked at Justin.tv (sucks) and some of the paid services. I have several servers I can use with plenty of power, I just can't find a good source on how to get it up and running.

Thanks in advance.
