can't ping gateway but everyone else can

I have an Elastix PBX with several SIP phones connected. The phones work, calls go and out, so the phones are connecting to the PBX. The PBX and the phones are all plugged into the same switch. An internet modem is connected to the network switch as well.

A laptop plugged into the same switch can connect to the internet.

The laptop and the PBX both have the same gateway IP address.

The PBX can ping the laptop. The laptop can ping the PBX.

I, remotely, can Teamviewer into the laptop and putty into the PBX. It all works, except the PBX cannot ping the gateway nor 8.8.8.8.

The route command on the PBX is correctly set to the gateway IP address.

I have, in a fit of desperation, even changed the MAC address on the PBX's NIC, in case the gateway is filtering by MAC address. No change.

Can anybody give me any idea what to look for? I don't, at this moment, have control of the gateway itself.
