Ubuntu Headless Server - Remote Access Question

I have a dedicated Ubuntu server installed on an always on machine in my home. SSH is installed as well and I can connect to my server via my windows laptop through the PuTTY and webmin clients while on my home network. I wish to administer my ubuntu server while away from home.

How must I configure my router/ubuntu server/windows pc/PuTTY in order to access my server via PuTTY and Webmin while outside of my home network? I am a uverse customer using their proprietary 2Wire router. I setup a minecraft server on a separate windows machine and forwarded ports to make that happen in the past. Is this the same idea?

I spent several hours googling to no avail. I am a GNU/Linux neophyte so any direction and/or advice is greatly appreciated. If I am in the wrong sub please let me know.
