Hello everyone!
I manage the IT Department for a mid-size furniture company. In each of our stores, we have 6-12 computer terminals for our salespeople to use. The terminals all connect via RDP to our servers in Rackspace.
Most of these machines are all either old Dell Inspirons running Windows XP or Wyse Cx0 thin clients running Windows Embedded Standard. All these machines are riddled with problems, and our IT department is not big enough to travel out to all the stores all the time to troubleshoot these constant issues. Also, we have found Microsoft Licensing to be a real pain in the ass, especially since they are asking me to complete whats called a Deployment Summary where I have to obtain every Microsoft License being used in the company and submit them to them.
So, we have decided to look into linux machines for our POS terminals. With these machines, we only have two basic goals:
- Connect via RDP to our servers in Rackspace
- Print to the local store network printers
I am also in the works of setting up CUPS print servers for each store that I can also use as a Ubiquiti Unifi server for when we overhaul our wireless.
But I wanted to ask this sub, what sort of hardware and distro would you guys recommend for a basic POS terminal?
Preferably, I would want them to be x86 machines, not ARM, and under $200/piece. Ideally it would also have VGA output and PS/2 ports for compatibility with our older peripherals, and solid state disk (no need for more than 4GB).
Thanks!
